Food For Thought!

Why the fuck don't people write movies like Cool Hand Luke anymore? A true instance of a real story. No need for gimmicks, twists, or fancy special effects. It's true Paul Newman is incredible hot, but he could have looked like Joe Blow and this movie still would have been amazing. Good thing he was so totally dreamy. Gets more attention in the long run, doesn't it?

Sidebar- It's bad when all the men you want are all older than your father. My father had me really late, too, so this means most of these men have passed on. Cary Grant, come back for me!

Don't watch the trailer, since the warden's voice made me barren inside. God, what a voice. It's enough to make my eyeballs shudder. The trailer repeats one phrase of his about 14,769 times to get the point across. But when Luke steps out of a doorway and says the exact same phrase, I was halfway through getting my clothes off for him.

Luke is charming. He is pained. He is unlucky. He is clever. He is lost. He is different. This story is the kind of gold every screenwriter in college would give their left nut to write. It's simple, it's touching, it's real, and it's got as many layers as Hamlet, without as much whining.

God bless this movie. When I love a film this much, there's no need to point out anything specific.

Except when I read the credits and saw Dennis Hopper's name. I watched the scenes with La Hopper again. I'll say this- Dennis strikes me as an egotistical, cranky, narcisstic bastard who loves his crack cocaine. I see why Peter Fonda and he had a huge fallout. But Dennis IS a cool actor. Watch his subtle tricks on screen, like listening to his mailbox, in the foreground. It's fascinating, like watching the neighborhood dog try to fight a scorpion on the ground.
