Chapter One:
The alarm found its uncanny knack of waking Grace when she least wants to be woken. An arm shot out of the mess of blankets and tried to smash where the insistant ringing began. She groaned and got up. Surely no human was supposed to feel this pained just from waking up?
Grumpily, she decided her brother must also suffer. After he was rousled out of bed, Grace decided against a shower, since the piercing cold would only gather strength from wet hair.
She packed a kit against boredom for the day ahead. Her mother was already up and showered. James was eating his breakfast, silently for once. With dismay, Grace also heard the steady stream of nagging which could only be her father, determined to accompany them to the hospital today.
She forced a quick breakfast past her lips and sent her brother to school. Finally convincing Dad to stay home, which only happened after he realized James was too young to come home alone (after all he couldn't even manage the heavy lock on the door), instead Dad contrived to make the departure as late as possible.
When Grace and her mother got to the car, Grace noticed in her sideview mirror, that her father was slowly crossing the street rags in hand, while impatient cars tried to manuever themselves around him.
"Is he going to wash my car now?" Grace frowned, thinking of all the days she washed the car for her dad, whose eyes always found more to criticize. But after wiping down the windows to a beautiful smear, he let them go.
"Now we're late..." Her mother looked wan. Perhaps because she had to forgo breakfast? Not even water was allowed this morning. No, more likely, the stress of a first surgery.
