eSSay
She used to order Shirley Temples.
Sitting at the bar was an ordeal. Unable to force down alcohol, she still craved to sit down on the barstool, order a drink, and receive admiring glances from the patrons of the bar. She figured Shirley Temples would be a safe bet.
Soon, she realized, everyone could tell that she was simply sipping soda. The men would glance at her with interest when she walked in, perhaps even turn to leering once she sat down alone, but that changed as soon as she got her drink. The eyes faded and the bodies turned away. Once or twice, some drunk asshole would try to hit on her anyway. But that wasn’t what she was looking for.
Slumped at a bar somewhere, there would be a lonely man. A man once strong and noble, but through trials of time, he would have been beaten into a sad sack of flesh, trudging through the misery that was his last days of life.
She preferred to be the heroine. It was a complex. Her best friend, Sammy, (perhaps by default since he was the only one, really) told her that she would never find Prince Alarming, as they dubbed him. The man who was once a prize catch, now a terrible emotional burden upon all those who know and love him.
“Sssweetie, would you like a drink…?” slurred the man next to her, sloshing his half-empty cup over her heels. Breaking out of her thoughts, she gave him the cold shoulder, turning away deliberately. She popped a maraschino into her mouth and savored the firm, sweet treat that burst into red honey over her tongue.
Kisses should be like that, she thought. Cherry kisses.
“Sex on the beach, bartender. I’m in the mood for something different.”
